Justin Bennett: The City Amplified / BMB CON #11

For Justin Bennett, a sound/installation artist, experimental composer and musician, on the occasion of the Ouborg Prijs, which he was awarded in 2009. Justin approached us with the idea to make at least two publications: One about his individual artistic work over the years, and one about the BMB con audiovisual performance group of which he is a founding member.

While the one is a serious art publication that highlights different facets and focal points of Justin’s work, we made a more playful, tongue-in-cheek object: an enormous leporello whose one side recounts BMB con’s 20 year history in fragments of rememberance and in onomatopeic exclamations, the sounds of the performances written down. The other side is the cinematic imagery of a performance specifically staged for this publication, photographed by the artists.

A limited subset of this twin edition is attached together – both as a gesture to say how strongly, like conjoined twins, Justin would not be he without BMB con, nor vice versa, and furthermore so that we could claim to have made a book that has sixteen flaps on the back cover.

112 pp, 17×23 cm + 2 pp, 272x23 cm [sic!]. For Stroom Den Haag and Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, 2010.
